Speedometer privacy.

App by Springlab · Effective 19 October 2026

Speedometer shows how fast you go, from your phone's GPS, and can add up a trip: distance, time, average and top speed. You need no account to use it. This page tells you what data the app uses, where it goes, and the choices you have.

Short version

  • The app reads your location from the phone's GPS to work out your speed. Only while the app is open, or during a trip you start, which shows a notification.
  • Your location and your trips stay on your phone. They are never sent to us or to anyone else, unless you share a trip file yourself.
  • The free app keeps only your last trip. With Pro it keeps every trip until you delete it.
  • The app shows no ads.
  • The app sends usage statistics and crash reports to Google Firebase, so we can fix and improve it. These never include your location or your trips. In the EEA, the UK and Switzerland it asks you first. Everywhere, you can turn it off in Settings (details below).
  • Pro is bought through Google Play. We never see your payment details.
  • We, Springlab, run no servers of our own.

Data the app uses on your phone

DataWhyLeaves the phone?
Precise location and speed from GPS, and how many satellites are in viewTo show your speed and how sure the reading isNo
Trips: start time, distance, time, average and top speed, and the route (one point a second: position and speed)To show the trip, its route and speed chart (Pro)No, unless you share a GPX or CSV file (Android may include them in your own device backup)
Your settings: unit, mode, speed alerts, colour, head-up display mirrorTo remember your choicesNo (Android may include them in your own device backup)

Permissions

PermissionWhy
Precise location (while using the app)Speed comes from the GPS chip. Approximate location has no speed. The app never asks for location in the background.
Foreground service (location)So a trip you start keeps recording with the screen off or in another app. A notification shows while it runs, with Pause and Stop.
NotificationsFor that trip notification. You can say no; the trip still records.
VibrationFor the touch feedback and the speed alert.
InternetSo Google Play can confirm a Pro purchase, and to send usage statistics and crash reports (you can turn these off). The speed and trips need no internet.

Usage statistics and crash reports (Google Firebase)

To see which features people use and to fix crashes, the app uses Google Analytics for Firebase and Firebase Crashlytics. Google runs them for us, as our service provider. While usage data is on, they collect:

DataDetailsWhy
App interactionsScreens you open (speed, trips, a trip, the head-up display), and events such as “trip started” (the mode), “trip stopped” (the mode and a rough distance band: under 1, 1–10, 10–100 or over 100 km), “head-up display opened”, “alert set”, “alert sounded”, “unit changed” (km/h or mph) and “trip shared” (GPX or CSV)To see which features are used
Crash logs and diagnosticsWhere the app crashed, app version, phone model, Android versionTo fix crashes
App instance IDA random ID for this install. It is not your advertising IDTo count users and sessions
Approximate locationCountry or region, which Google works out from your IP address (not from GPS)To see where the app is used

Never collected: your GPS location, your speed, your routes or trips, your name, your email, the advertising ID, or anything you type. The app turns off Google's advertising features in Analytics.

Your choice. In the EEA, the UK and Switzerland, the app asks you before it sends anything. Everywhere, you can turn it off in Settings → Share usage data. Then the app stops sending, deletes crash reports it has not sent yet and resets its usage data on your phone. Google's use of this data is covered by Privacy and security in Firebase and the Google Privacy Policy.

Sharing a trip

With Pro you can share a trip as a GPX or CSV file. The app writes the file and opens Android's share sheet; the file goes only where you send it. The receiving app's own privacy policy then applies.

Purchases

Pro is a one-time purchase through Google Play, with no subscription. Google Play handles the payment under Google's own terms and privacy policy. The app only asks Google Play whether you own Pro, and keeps that answer on your phone. We never see your payment details, and the app sends no purchase data to us.

Safety

Do not handle your phone while you drive. The speed is from GPS and can be wrong or late, for example in tunnels, between tall buildings or under trees; your vehicle's speedometer and the road signs come first.

Children

The app is not made for children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect data from them.

Your choices

  • Turn off Settings → Share usage data at any time.
  • Delete a trip on its page (Pro). In the free app, starting a new trip deletes the last one.
  • Take back the location or notification permission in Android Settings at any time.
  • Uninstall the app to delete everything it stored on your phone.

Changes

If this policy changes, we update this page and the date at the top.
