Three short beeps count down each change; a long beep starts the next phase. The page keeps your screen on. If you lock the phone or switch apps, the browser can stop the beeps. The Interval Timer app keeps beeping with the screen off.

How EMOM works

EMOM stands for “every minute on the minute”. At the start of each minute you do a set number of reps. Whatever time is left in that minute is your rest. When the next minute starts, you go again.

The timer has no separate rest phase for EMOM: each round is a full 60 seconds, with three short beeps before the next minute and a long beep to start it.

How many reps?

Pick a number you can finish in 30 to 40 seconds when you are fresh. That leaves 20 to 30 seconds of rest at the start, and less as you tire. If you miss the minute twice, lower the reps.

Examples for EMOM 10: 5 pull-ups, 10 kettlebell swings, 3 heavy deadlifts, or alternate minutes of 12 burpees and 15 sit-ups. For longer sets, use E2MOM: every 2 minutes.

Why the app, if the page works?

A web page runs only while its tab is open and the screen is on. Phones pause background tabs to save battery, so a browser timer can go quiet when you lock the screen or open your music app. This page asks the browser to keep the screen on, and it plans every beep ahead on the audio clock, so it stays on time while you can see it.

The Interval Timer app runs as a proper Android service. In our test on a Galaxy S23 it played 241 of 241 beeps in a 30-minute workout with the screen off and the phone in deep sleep, and the gaps between beeps were never more than 11 ms off. See how we measured it.

Questions

What does EMOM mean?

Every minute on the minute: you start a set at the beginning of each minute and rest for the remainder.

How long should an EMOM be?

10 to 20 minutes is common. Start with 10 and keep the reps you can finish in about 40 seconds.

What is an E2MOM?

Every 2 minutes on the minute. It suits heavier lifts or longer sets. Use the E2MOM preset.

Can I alternate two exercises?

Yes. Do exercise A on odd minutes and B on even minutes. The round counter shows which minute you are on.
