BPM
The first beat of each bar is higher. Space starts and stops; the arrow keys change the tempo by 1. The page keeps your screen on. If you lock the phone or switch apps, the browser can stop the click. The Metronome & Tuner app keeps playing with the screen off.
How to use it
- Set the tempo with −5, −1, +1 and +5, or tap Tap tempo in time with the music three or four times.
- Choose the beats in a bar (4 for most pop and rock, 3 for a waltz, 6 for 6/8) and how many clicks per beat.
- Press Start. The first beat of each bar is higher, and the dots show where you are in the bar.
On a computer, Space starts and stops it, and the arrow keys change the tempo by 1.
How to practise with a metronome
- Start slow. Play the hard bar at a tempo where you make no mistakes, even if that is half speed.
- Speed up in small steps. Two to five BPM at a time, only after three clean runs.
- Count in. Listen to one full bar before you play, so the first note lands on the beat.
- Let it go quiet. Once a passage is steady, practise keeping the time yourself for a bar or two, then check you land with the click. The app's Quiet Count does this for you.

Why the app, if the page works?
A web page plays only while its tab is open and the screen is on. Phones pause background tabs to save battery, so a browser metronome can stop when the screen locks or when you open your sheet music. This page plans every click ahead on the audio clock, so it stays even while you can see it.
The Metronome & Tuner app plays as a proper Android service. In our test on a Galaxy S23, 30 minutes with the screen off and the phone in deep sleep, it played 3,015 clicks, none missed, and the space between clicks never varied by more than 0.1 ms. While it plays, the whole screen becomes a big stand view you can read from a music stand, and a Bluetooth foot pedal can start it and change the tempo.
Questions
Is this online metronome free?
Yes. No account, no ads. It remembers your last tempo in your own browser, nowhere else.
How does tap tempo work?
Tap the Tap tempo button in time with the music, three or four times. The page takes the average of your last taps inside 2.5 seconds.
Does it work with the screen off?
Not reliably. A browser can pause a tab when the screen locks or when you switch apps. The page keeps your screen on while it plays. For screen-off practice, use the Metronome & Tuner app.
Is the click on time?
Each click is placed on the browser's audio clock, a little ahead of time, so it does not wobble when the page is busy. Bluetooth headphones add a delay of 100 ms or more to every click, so use the phone speaker or wired headphones for the tightest timing.
What do the Italian tempo words mean?
They are traditional names for speed ranges: Largo is very slow, Andante is a walking pace, Allegro is fast and bright, Presto is very fast. The table on this page gives the BPM ranges we use.
Can I hear the first beat of each bar?
Yes. The first beat is higher. Choose 1 to 12 beats in a bar, and 2, 3 or 4 clicks per beat for eighths, triplets or sixteenths.
