Three short beeps count down each change; a long beep starts the next phase. The page keeps your screen on. If you lock the phone or switch apps, the browser can stop the beeps. The Interval Timer app keeps beeping with the screen off.

How to set it up

  • Get ready: seconds before the first round. 10 is enough to put the phone down.
  • Work and Rest: the length of each phase in seconds. Set Rest to 0 for EMOM-style rounds that run straight on.
  • Rounds: how many work phases. There is no rest after the last one.

The total time updates as you type. Press Start, or the space bar on a keyboard. The screen fills with the phase colour and drains as the phase runs out: amber for work, blue for rest.

Why the app, if the page works?

A web page runs only while its tab is open and the screen is on. Phones pause background tabs to save battery, so a browser timer can go quiet when you lock the screen or open your music app. This page asks the browser to keep the screen on, and it plans every beep ahead on the audio clock, so it stays on time while you can see it.

The Interval Timer app runs as a proper Android service. In our test on a Galaxy S23 it played 241 of 241 beeps in a 30-minute workout with the screen off and the phone in deep sleep, and the gaps between beeps were never more than 11 ms off. See how we measured it.

Questions

Does the online interval timer work with the screen off?

Not reliably. A browser can pause a tab when the screen locks or when you switch apps. The page keeps your screen on while it runs. For screen-off workouts, use the Interval Timer app.

Can I play music while it runs?

Yes. The beeps mix with whatever is playing. Keep this tab in front so the browser does not pause it.

What do the beeps mean?

Three short beeps count down the last three seconds of each phase. A long beep starts the next phase. A longer beep ends the workout.

Is it free? Do I need an account?

Free, with no account and no ads. It saves your last settings in your own browser, nowhere else.

Which presets are there?

Tabata (20/10 × 8), HIIT 30/10, 40/20 and 45/15, EMOM 10 minutes, and boxing rounds (3 minutes on, 1 minute off). You can change any number.
